Atmastel’s Lunch Specials & New Italian Pastas For the Carb Lovers – South Beach
South Beach Avenue is home to a stretch of restaurants, bars and cafes adhering to a modernistic and probably niche crowd. Atmastel snugs itself right in the middle of it all, assuming a causal but still classy persona – perfectly fitting the bill for a girls’ night out, birthday celebration and romantic dinner.
Atmastel is known for their pizzas. Almost a year ago, I was stuffing myself with pizzas here, even breaking my diet for that extra slice. A few days ago and I was back again, looking at a revamped restaurant and new dishes which largely involved pastas.
Pushing past the massive door, I was doused in moody light, a deliberate contrast to homely decors of textile walls, short-back chairs padded with ink coloured cushions and broad tables draped in a black cloth. The plates that sat on beige paper mats bore such attractive motifs that I would have secretly stowed them away in my bag.
What caught my attention were the bouquets of flowers hanging like chandeliers from the ceilings, minus the sparkling glow but double the charm for exuding romantic vibes in the room.
Right across the room sits an open kitchen where you will find Corporate Executive Chef Angelo Sergio with his dedicated culinary team of chefs busy at work. A colossal chalk board pressed against the overhead storage rack, sprawled with specials of the day and monumental highlights.
We heard from Chef Angelo that Atmastel can make a staggering 25 types of pasta, of which we are trying three new signatures from him today!
The Oyster Black Ink Tagliolini is a balance of tradition with the diets of modern clientele. The dark mass of noodles was given a new leash of life, dotted with fresh Pachino Tomatoes and Sautéed Oyster as long as my palm. Never have I seen oysters on my Italian pasta but Chef Angelo had made it a reality. Taste-wise, I loved the tangy burst of tomato juices over the not-too-dry pasta while the oysters were simply briny orgasm in my mouth.
Maccheroncini with Sausage was cooked al dente. These tubular-shaped noodles were tossed in sliced Homemade Pork Sausages and Tomato Sauce, and then speckled with Fresh Basil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The tomato base warmed up the dish with vibrancy and taste. As for noodles, I would prefer the former with less chew.
Pappardelle Porcini Mushroom with Asparagus was served in a dreamy cream with Sautéed Porcini Mushrooms and a flourishing of Asparagus slices. Despite its rather lackadaisical appearance, the juicy mushrooms and crunchy asparagus added textures to the flat noodles. The noodles turned out to be one of the better tasting pasta with each finely shaved pieces well-cloaked in the light sauce; a paramount to the dish’s overall success.
Swooning in onto the pizza, Atmastel introduces the Pizza Vegetariana with a base slapped with melted Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese and a garden of Italian Cherry Tomato, Mushrooms and Seasonal Vegetables. The Italians celebrated cheese in their meals and it could jolly well be the ticket to marrying an Italian husband or wife.
Indulge in the Burrata Della Valle D’itria, almost part and parcel in every Italian restaurant. What’s better than having burrata cheese over Toasted Homemade Breads with a dash of Pesto Oil and Balsamic Reduction!
Calling out to the meat eaters is the Agnello Allo Scottadito – Grilled Marinated Lamb Rack drizzled in Negroamaro Red Wine and Madagascar Cocoa Bean Sauce. Nonetheless, the sides outshone the otherwise gamey meats. Giving special praises for the Parmesan Cheese Flan, it was likened a souffle, slightly dense yet not overwhelming. Baby Carrots were ridiculously crunchy and drenched in a Butter Raspberry Brine.
Appealing to the business crowd nearby, Atmastel whips up a dedicated lunch menu with items such as the Couscous Con Salmone Grigliato and Insalata Tiepida Di Farro E Pesce.
The Grilled Salmon Fillet in Orange Sauce was thoroughly enjoyable, served with a crown of Couscous rice mixed in chopped Carrots, Zucchini, Celery and Potato. Portion was agreeable with straightforward ingredients and enough dosage of omega-3 to keep me going through the day.
Farro might not sound familiar to many locals, but it is essentially a type of grain dish that brings about health advantages. Aiding in weight loss is one such benefit. It was an enchanting display with the Pan Fried Seafood, Tomatoes and Radishes cascading down the generous amount of farro.
Can’t decide which dessert to have? The Dessert Trilogy will give you three times the satisfaction. As the desserts are on a rotational basis, you won’t get bored of the same selection each time you return. I thought the desserts were quite well-executed with strong, bold flavours, especially the Mint Panna Cotta.
