Yakitori Lounge Hibiki Lunch Set – Wagyu Don, Yakitori Don & Curry Set
Bukit Timah Road is a long stretch of road housed to various restaurants, cafes and bars catering to the young and old. Commuters can arrive either by buses stopping directly outside the eateries or hop over from Sixth Avenue MRT station just a stone’s throw away.
A few metres from the station lies Yakitori Lounge Hibiki. The massive display of big sake bottles within the restaurant is hard to be missed and an alluring sight to those sake lovers out there.
If you are one to pursue the pleasures of sake, pair your lunch or dinner with a tipple or two. I am game for it, anytime of the day.
Set lunch is available daily including weekends, from 11:30AM to 2:30PM. The menu is concise and straightforward, showcasing a series of rice and noodle bowls where each order comes with a salad, side dish, pickles, fruits and hot/cold Houji Cha. Prices range from as low as $10 for curry rice set to $20 for something a little more premium.
Hibiki’s Wagyu Don $19 was nothing short of satisfactory. I love beef bowls and Hibiki’s version came with several decadent slices of chunky beef glistening in a coat of sweet umami glaze while dotted with sesame seeds. Best advice is to pop the whole thing into your mouth and chew instead of trying to gnaw it apart.
Onsen egg over fluffy Japanese rice brushed against the remnants of the sauce too was simply addictive.
If pork is your calling, Hibiki’s Tokujyo Don $20 is another worthy eat filled with stir fried marinated black pork shoulder and strips of Japanese leek with miso atop Japanese rice. Slightly on the sweeter palate, the sauce hugged the tender pork heaps in a sticky embrace. Fancy a sweet and savoury bowl? This is for you.
Hibiki’s Yakitori Don $18 allows you to have a taste of Hibiki’s signature yakitori. Our favourite of the lot was the chicken ball skewer where the meats were singed to the colour of liquorice at the edges while the insides remained moist and impactful.
It might seem hard to rave about yakisoba convincingly so trust me when the Kawagoe Fried Yakisoba $15 tasted like the typical comfort food, reminding me of our Char Kway Teow albeit less salty. Noodle was tasty and I was glad that the vegetables were crunchy instead of being cooked to death.
Craving for ramen? Hibiki’s Yakitori Paitan Ramen $15 was a tone-down version from your usual rich pork bone broth. Threw in a handful of red ginger, the milky broth turned a light hue of red amidst the black pork skewer, Ajitama and seaweed.
Hibiki’s Curry Set Lunch comes with a choice of Curry Udon $13 (that uses the high-grade Inaniwa udon noodles though the curry sauce could have delivered more whooomph), Curry Soba $13 or Curry Rice $10, that can be further customised to be spicy or non-spicy. Add on $4.90 for an extra serving of chicken/pork cutlet or breaded prawns (crispy and chunky).
Here with kids? No worries, because the kids get to savour their own set of non-spicy Kids Curry Set $10 too!
