Hook On Steamboat: Melting Cheese BBQ Buffet At Kembangan
Hook on Steamboat has been operating for 15 years since its first opening at East Coast, a haven for steamboat lovers and kite-flyers. Currently helmed by Jason and Sarah who took over the business 11 years ago, Hook on Steamboat has seen changes over decade.
Now, it has shifted to a new location at Kembangan for one year and six months already.
Besides the usual BBQ buffet, shabu shabu and mookata was slowly introduced over the years and finally the cheese fondue buffet was incorporated into the menu in April last 2016.
The handcrafted cheese, in particular, is refillable. Made with several types of cheese and blended with chicken stock, the result is a gooey and stretchable cheese that by itself is very flavourful and not overwhelming. In fact, it paired well with almost every other items we had and was one of our favourite!
The buffet selection boasts roughly 120 varieties, ranging from crayfish, tiger prawns, giant scallop, premium meats such as Kurobuta black pork and Meltique Beef Striploin, vegetables and noodles.
As for the seafood, they are carefully sourced by the owners from Jurong fishery port and Senoko fishery port three to four times per week so as to ensure the freshness of the ingredients.
Diners can choose from Cheesy Nacho BBQ Hotplate, Thai Fusion Mookata and/or Shabu Shabu cum BBQ with choices of soup such as Chicken Corn, Tom Yum, Tomato and Kimchi Broth.
The ala carte buffet is also split into two options: Deluxe or Premium.
Besides the ala carte, there is also a section in the restaurant where diners can help themselves to the unlimited steamboat ingredients and chilled meats.
Others available on the buffet line are quail eggs, clams, assorted balls and a myriad of sauces from mild to fiery hot. Diners can DIY your dipping sauces here too.
For those opting for the Premium Buffet, each diner get a choice of Kurobuta black pork, Meltique beef striploin or pacific clam. For the unlimited items, we particularly love the bamboo clams, streaky pork bacon, Dwaeji Galbi Pork Ribs and H.O.S marinated beef. The Nonya sambal prawns is also a must-try with their homemade sambal sauce.
Four diners is entitled up to one hotplate. If you come in a group of five, you get two hotplates (as what is featured below). Service is prompt and friendly as well. They take notice to change the foil once it starts to blacken and ask if you need more refills of the food.
Four thirst-quenching drinks at $4.90 each are also available as a side order. Amongst the Lychee, Calamansi, Mango and Sour Plum, I really enjoy the sour plum drink for its sourish taste that serves as a cleanser after a heavy meal.
For some sweet endings, there are six flavours of ice cream to choose from. What’s unique is that the ice cream are thai-imported and consist of flavours such as yam, coconut and paddle pop with gummy bears.
