Hvala at CHIJMES – Japanese Cafe for Matcha & Tea Lovers

CHIJMES has a new addition few days ago with popular teahouse, Hvala, landing a spot within its whitewashed colonial-styled building.

Along a walkway of restaurants, bars and cafes, Hvala is easily recognisable for its clean decor with floor-to-ceiling glass window and a capacious interior furnished with Japanese elements and minimalist furniture. A communal table sits in the middle of the room facing a long bar counter where the Japanese tea ceremony would commence.

It was a hush weekday noon at Hvala which slowly filled up with more tea drinkers relishing in teas and cakes while murmuring in low voices over the mundanes of life.

Hvala has another outlet at 313 Somerset, a takeaway kiosk where I frequent for their Matcha and Hojicha Soft Serve. As for the outlet at CHJIMES, Hvala doesn’t serve soft serve, but gelato which includes flavours such as the Premium Matcha, Hojicha and Ceremonial Matcha.

The variety of drinks available could rival that of a wine list, ranging from their house signature Whisked Matcha, Tea Latte and Ice Blend to Hot/Cold Brew, speciality Matcha, Green/Black Tea and so on. It would take you multiple after-meal visits to try them all.

Matcha Hojicha Latte Ice Blend $6 was a sweetened blend of both matcha and hojicha with milk and ice. I loved the balanced flavours on the tastebuds, neither too overpowering. The drink was a little on the sweet side but otherwise smooth texture and could last me the whole afternoon just sipping on it.

The Iced Hojicha Latte $5.80 was equally tasty and well-balanced!

Premium Matcha gelato $5.20 was thick, gooey and rich in flavour. Not so sweet and I thought it’s good to share.

Caramelised Shiratama Kinako $6.80 reminded me of our local black sesame soup, minus the intensity. The texture was neither too watery nor overly starchy, was smooth and tasted nutty. The Shiratama were soft while requiring some jaw muscles to work on it.

There is complimentary water and tea dispenser housed in beautiful hardwares too.

I do enjoy the tranquility of the Hvala outlet at CHIJMES. It feels peaceful to indulge in the favourite food of my life while bask in the backdrop of light instrumental music. You will see me returning.
