We began with the Sourdough, good on its own and even tastier with a dab of olive oil which was exceptionally aromatic.
The chef served us something special for the day. A pizza starter shaped into a star and drizzled in more olive oil.
We had a classic starter, the Prosciutto Con Melone & Fichi $25, which featured four huge Italian melon slices draped in thin parma ham while accompanied with plump-looking figs. Each bite altogether would allow you to taste the savouriness of the ham tugging at your teeth, followed by a mellow sweetness from the melon. The taste of the figs was in the middle ground, though could be more saccharine for my preference.
Portion was generous and the price tag explained it.
My favourite among all was the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara $25. It was actually a well-known Roman dish that might look simple but comprised of several elements.
Prepared table-side, the cooked pasta was stirred by Chef Carlo in the giant Grana Padano cheese wheel with the Guanciale (cured pork cheek) before being twirled into their respective plates and sprinkled with Pecorino Romano Cheese and Fresh Ground Black Pepper.
A dedicated twist from the carbonara I usually had, In Piazza’s version was drier such that each strand of the pasta was lightly coated in sauce and bits of cured meats. Pasta was of the chewier texture, thicker and full of mouth feel. Slightly on the heavier palate, it was also nutty and aromatic with cheese.
When you can’t decide on the flavours, get the 4-flavoured pizza, Stagioni $26 which comprised of cooked ham, mushroom, black olives and artichoke in the four quarters on the pizza base of Italian tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.
Just two minutes was enough to have the pizza baked perfect in the custom stone-oven by Chef-Owner Dario.
The pizza was paper thin with puffy crusty edges. Ingredients were handsomely spread across the surface and if you live by olives, that part of the pizza would make your day olive (alive).
Dessert was none other than the much-anticipated Cannoli Siciliani with Pistachio $11. I am a huge fan of cannoli. These tube-shaped Southern Italian pastries was originally prepared during carnival season but now they could be served as snacks or after-meal sweets.
In Piazza’s cannoli had crunchy confectionery shells with blistered surface though I would have preferred them to be more crisp and flakey. The blend of ricotta cheese with Marsala wine and candied orange were piped in delicately till they broke through both openings of the cannoli. Chopped pistachio, cocoa powder and icing sugar were then dusted over before the cannoli were ready to be savoured.
The fillings surprised me with a layer of rich creaminess compared to the ones I had elsewhere, while the candied orange lent a nice touch of tang. It could get quite filling for just one piece. Great for sharing!
