Lower East Side 45 – Romantic Mexican Restaurant in Singapore with a View

Bringing Mexican dining to greater heights, Hidden Door Concepts introduces Lower East Side 45 (LES45), where an intimate dining experience in the cosy 60-seater restaurant marries the breath-taking view from level 45 of Singapore Land Tower. Especially when night falls, dine in the alfresco area against the backdrop of the beautiful city skyline and catch a glimpse of the light show from Marina Bay Sands.

At LES45, expect true-blue Mexican cuisine ranging from classic ceviche, tacos and homemade dips to heartier options such as the tostadas and burritos. It gets fancier when each pockets or wraps come with various types of ingredients to satisfy your cravings for the night.

Starting with the Guacamole En Molcajete $30, the table-side service unveiled how this dish was made. Fresh avocados were scooped out from their shell before being pound in a stone pot. A series of seasonings add-ons, lime squeezing and more grinding soon evened out the mixture. It was then split into smaller portions and served to our table alongside a stack of original and charcoal-flavoured corn chips.

In between bites, I could taste lumps of guacamole and the tanginess of the tomato chunks. The texture was smooth and creamy, and would be good if more chilled. You could also ask for higher spicy level for that extra kick.

My favourite dish was the Scallop Aguachile $25 where neatly sliced scallops laid bare before being dressed in chopped avocados, pickled jicama and speckles of peppercorn. Scallops were notably succulent, firmer than fats and dissolved like marshmallows. Sharing this dish somehow became difficult.

I am hardly a fan of Brussel sprouts but LES45 did a nasty version of roasted Brussels Sprouts $17 in a skillet.

The heap of vegetables tasted nothing like the boiled ones; there were the blistering at the edges, the charred bitterness and a little dryness. Cojita cheese trickled down like snow flakes while fried guajillo twirls garnished the surface with a darker red. Underneath it all were sliced chorizo adding an extra dimension to the overall dish.

It’s either you like it or not.

My companions preferred the Chicken Tinga Tostadas $18 akin to an open-faced sandwich but on flat taco.

It was an explosion of sweet and creaminess with mango avocado and, shredded chicken marinated in what seemed like tomato chipotle sauce, pressed together underneath a sunny-side up. Measured almost palm-sized, this could be quite filling too.

For Tacos, you could get premium selections like the Lobster Tacos $35 or the Wagyu Beef Tacos $19. The Tempura Hake Tacos $18, on the other hand, could do with fresher fillet and better breading. Nonetheless, what intrigued us were the dollops of hibiscus mayo, sweet and floral, and paired well with the crunchy purple cabbage.

There’s no leaving a Mexican meal without the classic churros.

Les Churros $8 made a good end to the meal with thin crispy surface and soft chewy insides. Lightly dusted in sugar, these darlings were further drizzled in chocolate hazelnut cream.
