Monice Bakes Online Home Baker With Cute Customised Cakes in Singapore
Bakers make the world smell better
I am really happy to receive two boxes of cupcakes, a box of cartoon cookies and a customised cake with my favourite Moomin characters from Monice Bakes. I have to say that this is my first whole cake personalised according to my preference and gifted to me. Yes, it feels like a dream come true.
Uprising local baker?
Monice Bakes is founded by Monice Cheung, an online home baker who has enjoyed baking at a tender age. While it started off as purely interest, it eventually becomes something bigger.
It was a turning point for Monice around the late 2014 when she began posting photos of her home bakes onto her social media platforms – Facebook and Instagram.
Starting out from small
When I asked Monice how was it like when she first started, she gladly revealed to me that it was during that period of time when her friends and acquaintances got to know more about her bakes and requested to buy from her too!
Growing your own brand
Aptly named Monice Bakes, the brand name is getting more recognisable in Singapore. Monice’s frequent updates of her existing/new bakes and consistent 5-star facebook rating from customers have earned her a good reputation.
That said, growing your own brand is definitely not easy, especially when you first started. I have known home bakers or home cooks who join communities/ platforms that allow them to showcase their baking and culinary skills. For those aspiring to be your own chefs/bakers, these food communities and Facebook baking groups can actually be your pillar of support!
Do you know that Monice’s first bake was actually sugar cookie? Starting with baking for just the family to eat, she now caters to bigger groups, customising different range of products such as the flavoured cupcakes, cartoon butter cookies and cakes.
Creativity attracts!
If you are wondering how she can be so creative in her design, this is because she comes from an art background which fortunately allows her to put her useful skills into every design she makes. How good is that!
Imagine munching on cookies with designs like Gudetama, Snorlax, Pokemon, Tsum Tsum, Batman, Animals, Pooh Bear, Piglet… nooo can I just frame them up! Also perfect as gifts too.
A taste that makes you smile
I am not going to bluff but I think she makes one of the better sponge cakes I have ever eaten. The texture is really airy and fluffy; just the right kind of consistency and it slices through so easily (as can be seen in my video).
I don’t usually eat cream either. But the cream on the cake is smooth, light and actually complements better when eaten together. To my amazement, I could polish off the entire cupcake including the frosting on top. And my favourite goes to the Matcha Cupcake!
The thought that counts
The toppers for the cakes please me the most. Really want to keep them and I have teased Monice how she should have just supplied me with a bunch of those!
I don’t bake. So as someone on the receiving end, it is a very refreshing and delightful experience to have a cake that is not straight from any typical cake shops. If I have cakes like this for my every other upcoming birthdays, perhaps I would look forward to ageing each year faster!
When cued on what is baking like to her?
She replied with this
‘Every cookie, cake or cupcake is like an empty canvas for me to paint on with icing. Baking is my passion and it’s really satisfying when you can combine 2 hobbies into one.’
Awww…
