Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh 黄亚细肉骨茶 Kung Fu Tea & Breakfast Set

The name “Ng Ah Sio” is hardly a stranger to the bak kut teh scene in Singapore. So popular are they that even Hong Kong businessman Donald Tsang had to return to Singapore a second time to try their famed bak kut teh.

Tucked away from the main junction on Rangoon Road, the old school eatery was bustling with lunchtime diners when we visited to try their newly launched Kung Fu Tea and Bak Kut Teh breakfast set.

To start, we had the Kung Fu Tea which was poured over six delicate cups, each containing a small mouthful of the blend, which contains seven types of tea and herbs.

Kung Fu Tea X Bak Kut Teh promotion is available from now till 31 May 2019 and diners at Rangoon Road outlet (7am11am) and Chui Huay Lim Club outlet (9.30am – 11am) can enjoy a complimentary pot of Kung Fu Tea with a minimum spend of $35 per bill as part of the breakfast promotion.

Expectedly, the premium and classic bak kut teh are the stars of the show. Served Singapore style, the broth is intensely flavourful, with peppery notes providing that extra kick. Though the peppery taste could be a tad overwhelming for those who are used to the herbal version, the premium broth itself did yield a subtle, fragrant aftertaste that is perfect for colder weathers.

The meat itself is tender and falls off the bone easily, and goes well with either fluffy white rice or mee sua – the latter which we don’t see served often with bak kut teh.

Completing this hearty combination are the preserved vegetablesand fried you tiao, staples at every bak kut teh meal. I’m glad to say these did not taste overly salty or oily, which added to the freshness and flavour of the bak kut teh!

The real winner, however, is the Teochew Style Braised Pig’s Trotter Rice. Braised to perfection, the pig’s trotter melts in your mouth and is not fatty at all.

Service at Ng Ah Sio is warm and friendly, and I would not hesitate to dine here again just to get a second taste of that bowl of braised pig’s trotter. Plus points for having the famous Non Entree Desserts as a neighbour so diners can hop over for dessert!
