Nongmin Baekam Sundae 농민백암순대, Seoul – Famous Sundae Gukbap Restaurant in Namdaemun

A famous restaurant among locals, Nongmin Baekam Sundae 농민백암순대 is a must-visit for travellers looking for a taste of authenticity. There are a few branches with the main one in Gangnam district. I visited the outlet in Namdaemun.

Just before its opening at 11AM, a large crowd is seen outside the restaurant. There is a waitlist at the entrance to fill in your name and number of pax. Everything is written in Korean. At 11AM, a staff will call out the names on the list. Some customers would be grouped to sit together.

If you miss your chance to enter during the first round of calls, it would take about half an hour for the first customer to leave.

The restaurant is spacious but the seats are close to one another.

The signature items are the Sundae Gukbap (blood sausage stew with rice) KRW 10000, Tojong Sundae KRW 13000 and Suyuk (pork belly slice) KRW 36000. The menu is also available on Naver Map app if you need to be prepared before heading down.

Available on the table are various seasonings for the soup, like chilli and pepper.

Meanwhile, the banchan is fabulous, comprising of tangy kimchi radish cubes, super crunchy chilli peppers, miso paste and spicy anchovy sauce.

The food is served fast upon ordering.

The Sundae Gukbap brims with ingredients. My dining buddies order a larger portion and the pot comes with significantly more meat.

The soup is flavourful, not oily nor porky in taste. The chopped scallions can be added in by yourself.

I found about three pieces of sundae (blood sausage) in the soup. They are nice, tender and juicy.

There are other meat parts. Some are meat slices while the rest are mostly chewy parts of the skin/tendons. It is a hearty portion.

I was fortunate to sit beside a Korean couple (my dining buddies for lunch) who explained some of the above. They also insisted on paying for the meal which I am extremely grateful for.
