Oriental Kopi 华阳, JB – Popular Nanyang Coffee House for Egg Tart, Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak and Iced Coffee

Oriental Kopi 华阳 has finally opened in Johor Bahru City Square. The popular Nanyang coffee house is always teeming with long queues during peak timing. There are three other outlets in JB – Mid Valley Southley (nearest to customs), Johor Jaya and Aeon Tebrau City – and six in Kuala Lumpur.

I visited the outlet on a Tuesday afternoon and it was packed. Fortunately, the queue moved fast. Orders are taken outside before entering.

Famous for their huge iced coffee, egg tart, polo bun and nasi lemak, these must-tries can be seen on almost every table.

The signature Oriental Signature Nasi Lemak RM18.90 comes with fried chicken drumstick, soft-boiled egg, homemade sambal, pandan rice infused with eight different spices, ikan bilis, peanuts and cucumber.

The fried chicken is absolutely divine. The skin is crispy thin and the meat is tender. The surprise lies in the marinade, which seeps into the meat underneath, making the chicken so much more flavourful with each bite.

The sambal is not spicy. Rice is fragrant and tasty on its own. 

Some other variants include Nanyang Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak RM18.90, Oriental Fried Chicken Meat Mee Siam RM17.90, Oriental Chicken Hor Fun RM17.90 and Rendang Chicken Nasi Briyani RM21.90. 

Another highlight is the Oriental Egg Tart (RM9.80 for two, RM29.40 for six), available for dine-in and takeaway. The egg tarts are made fresh daily and best eaten warm. The crust is thick and flaky and holds a generous portion of smooth eggy custard. I ate one on the spot and brought the other back home. The crust was still crispy.

The Oriental Honey Polo Bun RM8.90 and Curry Double Lava Egg Toast RM10.90 look equally appealing too.

No one’s leaving Oriental Kopi without having a cup of their coffee. The Oriental Mocha (from RM11.90) is served in a tall mug, with foam dribbling down the sides. Taste-wise, it wasn’t as rich as I had expected but still quite decent.
