One of my favourite lunch spots in Toa Payoh has got to be Shaxian Snacks 沙县小吃.
The fiery spicy boiled beef and tangy pickled fish truly pack a punch and keep me coming back for more.
Tucked away in a corner of Food Alley in Toa Payoh, this humble eatery with limited seating, offers a bold menu that speaks volume.
The menu features the beloved wonton prepared in various ways, rice and noodle sets, and classic Chinese-style snacks.

The Boiled Beef Rice Set $10.80 is served in a vibrant, fiery red broth that’s flavourful with tolerable spice level. It can be spiced up further with the addition of lao gan ma (spicy chilli crisp), readily available on every table.
The bowl is loaded with tender beef slices, and cabbage that has soaked up the savoury goodness of the broth.
This is truly a hearty meal.
The Pickled Sliced Fish Noodle $10.80 is just as tasty.
The broth is richly flavoured, and tangy with lots of pickled vegetables. The fish slices are succulent.
It’s always a tough choice deciding between the two.
