Soi Thai Soi Nice – Thai Hotpot, Yen Ta Fo Shabu & Blue Desserts

Ever had Yen Ta Fo Shabu, colour-changing noodle and a menu full of blue desserts?

It is going to be an eye-opener at Soi Thai Soi Nice, where you get to indulge in a range of new and exciting dishes. Currently standing at two outlets with the first being at Alexandra Central, the second outlet has opened at Seletar Mall within the heartlands.

Hold your excitement as Soi Thai Soi Nice introduced their classic Royal Thai Hotpot (regular $38.80, big pot $68.80), with a choice of Fish or Tom Yum Broth.

The pot came generously filled with ingredients – crayfish, prawns, green mussels, roasted pork, enoki mushrooms, Chinese sausage, Chinese cabbage, soft boiled egg and a raw egg lying on ramen.

What’s exceptional was the broth which I found myself enjoying it tremendously. As it boiled, the soup became rich and thicker. I had expected a sweeter or milder version since it was a hotpot. But the broth had just the right balance of spiciness in it without overpowering the ingredients.

The level we had was the normal spicy level. Fans of spicy stuff can challenge yourself to a spicier soup base. Yes and I am game for that!

Anyway, I simply couldn’t stop myself from scooping more and more from the pot.

Something new on the menu is the Yen Ta Fo Shabu $22.80. It might look small but the pot was really deep. You can actually scoop out many pieces of fish balls, prawns balls, tau kee, egg tofu, fish cakes, kang kong, onsen egg, glass noodles and tiger prawns. The crispy fish skin and prawn dumplings were also good with the sauce.

The flavours were comparatively heavier, with a mix of spiciness and sweetness.

The Thai-styled Steamed Seabass $28.80 was probably one of the most affordable fish I have ever eaten in a restaurant for the quality and price.. It was also a big fish with tender meat, best shared amongst big groups!

Resembling our wanton mee, the Soi Thai Dry Dumpling Noodles $9.80 took a spun on the local cuisine featuring two fried dumpling pieces and slices of pork on a bed of cold noodles. I thought it would do better with slightly more sauce/soup to make the noodles easier to stir and slurp upon.

One of Soi Thai Soi Nice’s signature was the Cha Om Omelette $9.80. The egg texture was really fluffy and moist, though the fillings within might be too herbaceous for some. Nonetheless, it was worth trying.

Deep Fried Pork Belly $11.80 was one of my favourite dish, meaty with crispy edges. Very tasty on its own and even more aroi with the sauce!

What’s intriguing is this Butterfly Pea Glass Noodle Salad $9.80!

The noodles was dyed in butterfly pea to give it the blue colour. Upon mixing in with the sauce, it turned a shade of purple. What a pretty sight! Served cold and squeezed in with some lime, this dish was light and refreshing on the palette.

The thrilling sensation continued into the desserts. We had the Blue Treasure $4.80 – a rendition of the raindrop dessert. This was a lightly sweetened purplish jelly sphere enclosing a flower, with a side of ‘blue rubies’ made of water chestnut soaked in blue pea. What an gem.

If noodles can be blue, so can rice!

The Butterfly Pea Sticky Rice with Coconut Ice Cream $5.80 rounded up the filling yet satisfying meal. Lift up a piece of the sticky rice, slab over a dollop of fragrant coconut ice cream, and chew on it. There, you can’t deny the irresistible lure of the cool creaminess over soft chewy rice.

Soi Thai Soi Nice also has an ongoing weekday lunch promotion from $7.80++, 11:30AM – 3:30PM.

Pick from a selection of Basil minced Pork Noodles, Soi Thai Boat Noodles and Tom Yum Soup with Rice and Sunny Side Up, to name a few, and add on a dollar to enjoy a complete set for a drink and a side.
