Typhoon Cafe at Plaza Singapura brings A Taste of Taiwan to your table
Get ready to pack your bags and enter the redolent typhoon located at the heart of town, where diners will be swept into a heavenly realm of Taiwanese food fare.
Opened on 13th December, Typhoon Cafe – the newest concept under the Creative Eateries group – is busy kicking up a storm to impress diners with their delectable range of Taiwanese dishes, abstract desserts, and artisanal teas. For those curious to be blown away by these otherworldly creations, the café is situated on the 4th floor of Plaza Singapura with several ongoing promotions (more information at end of post).
Starting with the Typhoon Taro Chips $12.90, one might feel bewildered at the sight of the combination – Taro Chips drizzled with lemon sour cream, served with a side of oyster tofu ragout.
I love the oyster tofu ragout, mildly spicy, smooth and chewy at the same time. Together with the crunchy root vegetable, I thought they would be good as separate entities to bring out their individual flavours.
Feast on authentic Taiwanese staples such as the Fan Fried Enoki Mushroom $7.90 and Golden Chicken Fritter $8.90 both dusted in fragrant salt and pepper.
The mushrooms fanned out beautifully and was crispy on the outside while juicy within. For the price, the generous portion would leave you satisfied to the brim.
Bringing one of Taiwan’s famous street food to the table is the Fried Pork Intestine $13.90. Take a dip in the homemade spicy chilli sauce and bite into the paper thin crispiness straight through the soft fatty layers within. Nothing can be more sinful than an addictive snack for innards lovers.
Typhoon Cafe offers a range of Board Set aka Set Meals that comes with a soup of the day, chilled salad and a side of sauce.
Featuring their popular item is the Signature Taiwanese Oyster Mee Sua $14.90. Replacing the oysters in the mee sua are fried pork intestine whereas a bowl of crispy oyster fritter with vinegar chilli dip is served on the side. The noodles were really smooth in the gooey broth.
Speaking of Taiwanese cuisine, we ain’t leaving out the Lu Rou Fan $12.90. Portion might not seem huge but the pork belly stew with braised egg in the rich savoury sauce danced flavourfully on my tastebud, albeit on the saltier side. Perhaps the plate could be smaller to make the meal look more compact too.
One of my favourite has got to be the Pan-seared Bee Hoon Pancake $12.90, reminding me of the Zi Char pan fried bee hoon minus the wok hei.
Slicing it apart, one could witness the strands of bee hoon interwined with eggs and mushrooms. There was a light egg fragrance and I was glad that the amount of egg was just the right ratio to the noodles. The pork belly was thick yet tender. This would make a more filling meal as compared to the Lu Rou Fan aforementioned. Recommended.
Char Siew Glazed Nagano Baby Pork Rib $15.90 was slow-braised in stout broth and served with rice. The sauce was amazingly delicious while the meat fell off the bones easily.
Dessert was a whimsical affair with the ‘erupting’ Hell Valley Volcano $14.90, the ‘avalanche’ Typhoon Pavlova $13.90, Cloud Nine $14.90 and Cereal Co n Toast $14.90.
Dessert experience can be found in my previous visit here!
Pair your meal with Typhoon’s Signature Fruit Teas such as the Tropical Passion Fruit $8.50 and Citrus Elixir $8.50 or hot Artisanal Tea $5.50 ranging from the Chef’s recommended White Ginger Pear to Caramel Nougat and Mountain Oolong.
