Wan He Lou 萬合樓 Chinese Restaurant at Jalan Besar – Lobster Porridge & National Day Specials

The Signature Lobster Porridge at Wan He Lou 萬合樓 at Jalan Besar, created by Chef Lau Siaw Dee, won the first prize in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Culinary Event. A visit to Wan He Lou 萬合樓 is not complete without savouring this delicious pot of lobster porridge.

Featuring an extensive menu, Wan He Lou 萬合樓 serves a range of Chinese dishes from seafood cooked various ways to appetisers and comfort food like nourishing soup, meats and vegetables, all at wallet-friendly prices.

The Crispy Lotus Root with Salted Egg yolk [$11.90 (s), $19.90 (m)] was super addictive that everyone at the table went for second helping. Thinly sliced, each lotus root was fried and enveloped in a rich salted egg coating.

The Pan-fried Kurobuta Pork [$14.90 (s), $24.90 (m)] was, on the other hand, a complete opposite. Featuring tender meats drenched in a very sweet sauce, each piece was bite-sized and sinfully tasty.

The most highly-anticipated dish at Wan He Lou 萬合樓 was the award-winning Chef ‘Lobster’ Lau’s Original Signature Lobster Porridge. Priced $31.90 onwards, the Lobster Porridge can be customised according to the weight and amount of lobster you want.

Our pot came with a large 750g Brazilian Spiny Lobster (about $60). Cooked Teochew style, the rice was prepared in a flavoursome broth developed using a secret recipe. It was very heartening, yet easy on the palate and not too salty.

The lobster meat was surprisingly sweet and tender. Perfect.

Wan He Lou 萬合樓 has also launched special dishes to in-lieu of National Day 2017!

The combination of Scallop with Cheesy Black Truffle Sauce ($8.90 per piece) was heavenly such that you would want to mop up all that sauce. It wasn’t as cheesy as I expected but the subtle hints of the black truffle slowly seeped in as I munched on the scallop.

Looking more festive, the Chilli Crab Pate paired with Poached Langoustine ($8.90 per piece) would make seafood-lovers swooned, especially with the tasty sweet and spicy sauce.

One of my favourite dish was the Coconut Pudding with Ice Cream ($9.90). A unique dessert with a smooth coconut pudding inside a coconut husk while topped with an icy coconut ice cream. Mind you, it can get quite filling too.

Wan He Lou 萬合樓 serves unpretentious Chinese cuisine at rather affordable prices. Their Signature Lobster Porridge is a must-try and unforgettably, the Brazilian Spiny lobsters are so delicious with their sweet chunky flesh.
