Blackball Malaysia – Taiwanese Dessert with Matcha Shaved Ice

Blackball is a popular Taiwanese brand founded in 2006. Famous for its grass jelly, it is often paired with shaved ice or chewy mochi balls, in cooked beans and brown syrup. I remembered when Blackball opened its first outlet in Singapore and I was thrilled at the various chewy balls such as the taro balls and sweet potato balls piled into each bowl. Of which, I particularly enjoyed the sensation of working my jaws over chewy darlings, followed by the reward of smooth, silky grass jelly that could easily glide down my throat.

Besides Singapore, Blackball has expanded to Asia countries like Malaysia, China and Vietnam, and even USA and Australia. The menu was sightly different which I found out during one of my trips to Malaysia. The Blackball at KSL City offered a varied menu, one of which struck me was their matcha desserts.

For lovers of matcha, this is a feast to the stomach with the Matcha Soya Delight, Uji Matcha Jelly and Green Forest Matcha Ice. I had the Green Forest Matcha Ice RM 18.90, which was the only one that came in the form of a shaved ice with matcha syrup drizzled over. Perched precariously was a rich sesame ice cream while the sides of the shaved ice was flanked with a mix of normal and matcha jellies.

I was glad that the matcha jellies had just the right kind of bitterness, neither too sweet nor overly soft.

Served on the side were a dollop of red bean paste and two matcha-infused mochi!

Definitely worth a trip back!
