Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu – Below $8 Korean Soft Tofu Stew at Ang Mo Kio Hawker Centre

Opened by chef-owner Nam Kyoung Soo whom founded the popular SBCD Korean Tofu House, Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is an express outlet that offers the similar soon tofu at wallet-friendly prices. Currently, there are three outlets that are located at Ang Mo Kio, Jurong and Punggol.

The menu features six soon tofu sets ($6-8) and each set comes with a side of kimchi, seaweed and rice. Some highlights include the Seafood Soon Tofu Set $8, Dumpling Soon Tofu Set $7 and Pork Soon Tofu Set $7. Add on a plate of Mandu (available in pork, kimchi or japchae filling) at $4.5 for three pieces and $6.50 for five pieces.

If you have been to SBCD Korean Tofu Korean House, one bowl of soon tofu can set you back at $20 plus. Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu offers a similar version at close to a quarter of the price though one can expect a difference in portion and taste.

The Seafood Soon Tofu is served in a small pot and brims with ingredients like mussels, clams, prawns, squid and tofu. Soup-wise, it’s mildly spicy and not as flavourful as I had expected even for the price. The tofu is silky smooth and delicious.
