Char Grill Bar – Affordable, Tasty & Well-portion Western Food in Hawker Centre

A quick search online and I realise that Char Grill Bar has got outlets sprawled across many hawker centres. It is a wonder why I have not come across this stall nor felt the compelling urge to try it out. Truth be told, I generally avoid western stalls in hawkers and head straight for my usual fix, be it the Chinese noodle soup, Wanton Mee or Fish Steamboat, to name a few.

Char Grill Bar comes strongly recommended by a close friend who lives near the outlet at Bukit Panjang. I was half-anticipating it but still made my way over to the seemingly ulu (for me) yet bustling part of the neighbourhood.

The menu struck me first with its long list of over 60 food items ranging from their signature char flaming grill chicken, steak and fish to spaghetti, sausage and burger. Some of the sets also come with your chosen two side dishes such as baked potato, season vegetable, onion rings, coleslaw, Mexican cheese pasta and garden salad.

Currently, there is a Salted Egg dish promotion and we decided to try the Golden Salted Egg Chicken $7.90.

The fried chicken had tender and juicy meats coated in the thin crispy skin, fried perfectly to give that satisfying crunch and yet not overly oily. The salted egg sauce formed a blanket over the surface; it appeared more in liquid form and neither too overwhelming in the salted egg taste which made it even easier for us to dig in and mop the plate clean.

For the price, it was a good portion with sides like the clean fresh greens and my friend’s favourite Mexican cheese pasta (richly drenched in what could be nacho cheese).

We also had the Char-Grilled Chicken $6.60 served with BBQ beans and garden salad in generous lobes of sauce.

The chicken was on the tougher side as compared to the salted egg chicken. Nonetheless, with the brown sauce, it remained as flavoursome.

I am truly amazed at the quality here for what we are paying for. A revisit is on its way after I have sussed out the outlets nearer to my home!
