Chinatown Food & Amstar – Tasty Molten Lava Cake, Cream Puff & Dim Sum easily prepared at home
I love walking down the aisle in supermarkets, pouring over the different labels and marvelling at the various kinds of food on the shelf. It’s always exciting to find something new in the market or products I never thought possible to be found, packaged and retailed somewhere.
Chinatown Food and Amstar, for instance, has got a number of their products in major supermarkets like Ntuc Fairprice, Sheng Siong and Giant, on top of its online store.
From cakes and pastries to dim sums, dumplings and heartier food, they could be as convenient as ready-to-eat desserts or fuss-free microwavable items.
Some signatures include the Molten Lava Cake, Mao Shang Wang Durian Tang Yuan, Egg Custard Lava Sesame Ball and more!
The Artisan Portuguese Chocolate Cake $5.85 features a rich chocolate pound cake, good for three to five pax. The cake can be a little dense after defrosting. For a fluffier texture, it is recommended to microwave it a little. The cake is really delicious with a sweet aftertaste.
The Chocolate Molten Lava Cake ($4.90 per box of two pieces) uses Belgium chocolate. it can be easily microwaved or heat in the oven based on the instructions on the flipside of the packaging.
I love the thick, bittersweet chocolate core. It would be nice to pair with ice cream and strawberries to balance off the richness of the chocolate.
If you are looking at hosting a mini tea party, these Mini Cream Puff $4.05 comes in either chocolate or vanilla flavours with packaging size up to 1kg. The best thing is they can be eaten straight after defrosting.
Wait no further to sink your teeth into the soft chewy skins of the Mao Shan Wang Glutinous Rice Balls. You can now have these durian-filled tang yuan regardless of the occasion.
Speaking of our local favourite, dim sum, it is widely celebrated by many.
Now you can easily make these at home when you are craving for them.
Chinatown Food and Amstar bears the Lo Mai Gai ($9.50 for five), Mini Chicken Pau ($8.90 for three), Curry Chicken Pau ($12 for three), Snow Mango Pie $6.95, Lava Sesame Ball ($2.95 for ten), Yam Cocoon ($3.30 for ten) and more on their online store too.
While some items can be fried in oil for that crispiness, I had them air-fried which also worked out well. The Lava Sesame Ball, especially, was a good mouthful of creamy sweet and saltiness, while the surface remained crunchy and aromatic with the sesame seeds.
Even the Yam Cocoon burst with a luscious yam filling that would satisfy any yam lovers out there.
You can also be your own chef by adding your desired ingredients onto the Mini Tart Shell ($4.95 for 18 shells). I simply can’t wait to make my own canapes by squeezing in the cream cheese (topped with smoked salmon) or lemon custard (decorated with whipped meringue). The tart shells are also air-fried recommended.
