Spinelli Coffee – AvoCuddle Sakura Salad & Sakura Matcha Cake

In Singapore, when pink food starts appearing on the shelves, you would have guessed that somewhere in Japan, it is cherry blossom.

Indeed, the time has come for the Sakura season! From now till 28 April 2019, relish in Spinelli Coffee’s range of sakura-themed food and drinks.

One of my favourite salads that I have eaten by far goes to the AvoCuddle Sakura Salad $12 that comes with an in-house flavoured soft boil egg, a slab of oven-baked seasoned salmon and freshly peeled avocado halves over a bed of greens, edamame and chopped onions. The sauce was translucent yuzu wasabi which I would advise a half or 3/4 portion to be tossed with the salad. Anything more would render the vegetables too much salinity.

I find that the ingredients in the bowl are simply on point and nicely balanced one another. The taste of onions, however, was stronger in the salad bowl. Hence, if you are not a super big fan of onions, other alternatives you can try include the Quinoa Patty Bowl and Sundried Chicken Salad Bowl too.

The Sakura Matcha Cake $4.20 features a layer of light pink over a Uji Matcha-infused base. The cake was light and not as sweet as I thought. I liked that the Matcha flavour is rich and gives depth to the overall taste. What’s interesting is the use of Japan-imported dried Sakura flowers. More than just for garnishing, you can actually eat it! Balance it off with the sweet jelly dome directly underneath, because the dried sakura flower surprisingly tasted just like a sour plum.

The cake, though, can get a little on the dry side so here’s an excuse for you to get some exclusive Sakura drinks – the thick slushie-liked Matcha Cheese Twist and thirst-quenching Strawberry Blossom Fruitti Twist.
