Lao Jiang Superior Soup 老江一品汤 Signature Fish Soup & Ipoh Hor Fun with at least 7 Ingredients

Some days, you just want to kick back with a bowl of your favourite fish soup, when comfort is the only thing you want in your belly. And on rainy days – let’s not forget how satisfying some hot soup would warm your belly.

Lao Jiang Superior Soup 老江一品汤, a casual eatery specialising in Malaysian fish soup, is one such place that is capable of dishing up such dishes. With two outlets in Bukit Timah and Upper Changi, Lao Jiang also has its eyes set on a third outlet in Punggol – just a head’s up if you are living or working in the area!

Sides to whet your appetite are aplenty, with Homemade Nor Hiang ($7 for small, $13 for large) being one of their highly recommended items. Prepared in house from scratch, this dish was crispy but not too oily.

The Kyoto You Tiao ($6 for small, $10 for large) is another signature of Lao Jiang’s, with the chilli sauce adding a slightly sweeter note to it.

My favourite out of the three side dishes was the Crispy Fish Sticks $4, unassuming but nonetheless delicious! These are best paired with a side of vegetables or one of Lao Jiang’s soupy mains, to alleviate the saltiness.

Lao Jiang prides itself in its Superior Ipoh Hor Fun and Signature Fish Soup, and it’s not hard to see why it is worth your buck!

Don’t be alarmed at the pricing of the Superior Ipoh Hor Fun $9.50because you get at least seven ingredients in one bowl: grouper slices, fish maw, abalone, de-veined prawns, and meat balls – not forgetting one giant fish ball, and plenty of minced pork and pork slices.

I was honestly impressed they managed to pack so many ingredients for under $12! What you also get is a very sweet broth, great to sip along with the noodles.

The Signature Fish Soup $12, while simple, was also well received at our table. Generous amounts of grouper fish slices are mixed in with chopped button mushrooms and fresh vegetables. The broth from this mix had a slightly saltier note to it, but was still delicious.

Tucked away in quiet East Village, Lao Jiang is a cozy space to get your fish soup fix. I would happily drop by for one more round if I’m in the area!
