Roots Dessert Bar Penang – Watermelon Cake & Tofu Cheesecake

Roots Dessert Bar offers more than fancy plated desserts. It is amazing how the various ingredients can come together to create a whole new level of experience.

On the menu are nine types of desserts well-listed with their corresponding components. There are also light bites such as the interestingly-named Pulled Apart Garlic Bread RM14 and Cheese Baked Nachos RM15. 

Roots Dessert Bar is famous for the Watermelon Cake RM19, which is only available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is a cubical cake layered with almond dacquoise, a thick slab of watermelon and rose cream, then garnished with strawberries, chopped pistachios and edible petals. Beetroot crumbs flanked the lone cake with the sweetest of pink.

As if speaking to each other, the watermelon was equally sweet and juicy, married with the smoothness of the rose cream. It’s not jelat. In fact, the cream was as light as could be.

The Tofu Cheesecake RM17 is accompanied with honeycomb pieces, lime jelly glob and a side of gula melaka sauce.

It would be nicer if the tofu cheesecake were softer. Nonetheless, it was served slightly chilled which made it really appetising too.
