Surrey Hills Grocer, ION Orchard – Australian Cafe for hearty Brunch and pretty French Toast

Located in a corner of ION Orchard carpark, Surrey Hills Grocer‘s unconventional location has not deterred diners from scouting out this newest brunch spot in town.

If the flagship outlet at Upper Jurong Road is too far for you, its second home here is much more accessible while similarly boasting a grocer and dining area. Ice cream and bakes like tarts and Bombini doughnuts are also available for takeaway.

Reservations are highly recommended. We came down for a weekday lunch and it was packed!

The menu offers a wide variety of Australian-style brunch dishes and mains, desserts and beverages.

Some choices include the Melbourne’s Avo Toast $24, Chorizo Shashuka $32, Farm Fresh Barramundi $38, Wagyu Curry Pasta $28, Miso Carbonara Udon $26, Triple Truffle Fries $19 and vegan-friendly Cauliflower Steak $27.

Portions are huge. The Pork Shoulder Benny $29 is humongous enough for two. Perched on fluffy burger buns are generous amount of 48-hour sous vide pork shoulder dressed in sweet house bbq sauce, greens, poached egg, hollandaise sauce and maple bacon.

The Scrambled Eggs Chicken Truffle Danish Roll $28 comes with a side of tater tots which is quite hearty too.

Another brunch item on the menu is the Roasted Mushrooms White Bean Stew $24. You get pieces of sourdough bread hidden underneath loads of juicy mushrooms in creamy cheesy sauce and kale, and a topping of crispy chickpeas. The two sous vide eggs add to the creaminess of the dish.

The taste is quite one-dimensional. It would be good to have something refreshing/tangy to balance it.

Meanwhile, the Cereals Crusted French Toast $24 is a must-order. It’s delicious and the beautiful presentation makes it even more enticing. The brioche French toast is crusty and served with ice cream, fresh cream, lots of fruits and a shot of honey.
