The 50 Cents Fest 2019 for Hokkien Mee, Braised Pork Belly Bun, Oyster Cake etc at Chinatown Food Street

Don’t you wish you could turn back time to when things were simpler, food was cheaper, and life was about deciding whether to have rice or noodles for dinner?

Now you can feast on all these on 27 and 28 July 2019, when the fourth edition of The Fifty Cents Fest will be taking place at Chinatown Food Street. Part of the Singapore Food Festival, which is in its 26th year running, this year’s feast takes us into the roots of Hokkien culture, the biggest dialect group in Singapore.

With bite-sized servings of traditional Hokkien dishes going for $0.50 – $3.00 a pop, it’ll be hard to say no to these delicious offerings during the two-day festival.

And in case you’re worried about pulling together enough small change, OCBC PayAnyone is here to let you go cashless! The first 10,000 OCBC PayAnyone users get to redeem $1 off coupons. Talk about bringing the best parts of today’s technology on a trip down memory lane.

Highlights include Kong Ba Bao, or Braised Pork Belly Bun (2 x $0.50) by heritage restaurant Beng Hiang. Three layer pork is carefully boiled, fried, and tossed in a medley of seasonings and sauces to create a richly flavoured slab of meat tucked in a fluffy bun. Another iconic brand to look out for is Kim Choo Kueh Chang, which specialises in traditional Hokkien Rice Dumplings.

Buddha Jumps Over The Wall (6 x $0.50) by Hidden Restaurant features a mouthwatering medley of abalone, ginseng, chicken, and fish maw in a comforting broth. Slurp up some flavourful Fried Black Hokkien Noodle (2 x $0.50), worth breaking diets for.

Other noteworthy dishes are Braised Duck Rice (2 x $0.50) and Hokkien Style Cabbage Rice ($0.50). For a refreshing thirst quencher, look no further than Ai Yu Jelly ($0.50) and Red Date Drink ($0.50). And peckish diners can snack on some UFO Oyster Cake ($0.50), named after the the flying enigma its shaped was inspired by!
