The Communal Place – Homely Cafe Bar with Affordable Food & We Bare Bears plushies at Joo Chiat Road

The Communal Place, as its name suggests, is a cozy new cafe-bar nestled deep in Katong. With an extensive menu of salads, pastas, burgers, small bites and desserts, it’s hard to see why customers wouldn’t be spoilt for choice when they visit this place.

Upon entering, the interior caught our eyes before the menu. Fronted by an attractive water fixture, the industrial themed space has several adorable We Bare Bears plushies scattered across tables. When we asked the owners what the bears were for, their answer was that they’re there to draw families with young children into the cafe – and guess what? It works!

The Communal also has a few old favourites up their sleeves, too. The L’il Peckers $13 will definitely save diners the meddlesome trouble of picking through fried chicken meat, with the flesh expertly twisted around the bone in a lollipop-like shape.

Taste wise, it wasn’t bad either and the meat went really well with the chilli sauce, which was house-made and tasted just like your chicken rice chilli!

A couple of homely mains are what keep the regulars coming back for more.

Both the Chicken Roulade $18 and Miso Salmon $18 are served with a colourful medley of mash, asparagus, and carrots, healthy and pleasing on the eye.

As for the Chicken Roulade, it consisted of rolled chicken with stuffing in the middle that was filling and flavoursome, while the Miso Salmon had such a pleasing aroma that made us want to tuck straight away!

For dessert, you definitely wouldn’t want to miss the Chocolate Dome $16, an interactive piece of artwork – chocolate dome with vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, biscuit crumbles, and many other goodies slathered in sweet sauces – all revealed apart when you break open the dome by smashing it on your plate. Now that’s a show stopping entrance! Taste-wise, it was a fantastic dessert with lots of crunchy and crumbly ingredients; perfect for sharing.

Besides coffee and alcohol, The Communal Place also gets creative with its Mocktails $8, which are fizzy concoctions of sodas and fruit flavours guaranteed to set your tastebuds tingling.

If you’re looking for a casual new hangout that combines the perks of a cafe and a bar, check them out!
