Faculty of Caffeine – Johor Bahru JB Cafe for Brunch and Coffee

Faculty of Caffeine is a rustic-looking cafe located in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. We took a cab from the Singapore Customs to the cafe which was also within walking distance from Johor Bahru City Square.  Situated along Jalan Trus, just a lane beside Jalan Wong Ah Fook and close to Replacement Lodge, it was rather reachable.

We arrived early for brunch and the cafe was already several tables filled on a weekday. It is a cafe that specialises in waffles so coming here, we must try their signature. The menu also offers a range of mains, desserts and light bites for sharing.

The food comprises of international flavours ranging from Western to Japanese and Korean. There are some interesting combinations that stands out like the Hainanese Fried Chicken (on waffles) RM19.90 and Fried Chicken Maze Ramen RM19.90.

They also sell Tendons with a choice of Chicken RM22.90, Vegetarian RM22.90 or Unagi RM28.90 and desserts such as The Tiramisu Waffle RM19.90 and The Bananuts RM16.90 that consists of a drool-worthy spread of brulee banana, peanut butter and nutella on waffles.

We had their signature Korean Fried Chicken RM19.90 to start with. It arrived pipping hot in a basket with a side of Korean Gochujang Mayo. This was quite addictive and each piece was fried in a thick batter. The chicken could be juicier otherwise, it was relatively decent.

We were torn between getting The Breakfast RM22.90 or the Japanese Curry Soft Shell Crab RM28.90 but decided to go for the latter; at least it was something we wouldn’t get anywhere else in Singapore.

The Japanese curry sauce especially was superb. It was rich, flavourful and not as spicy. We paired it with the lightly crisp waffles and crunchy soft shell crab, totally polishing it off from its tiny saucer.

As for the soft boiled egg, it was perfectly cooked, releasing a stream of golden lava once poked.

You can also order juices, coffee and tea from Faculty of Caffeine while chilling here. Prices start from RM6 for an espresso.

I read that this cafe is opened by a duo – a medical doctor and interior designer. That speaks for the cafe design.

If you are in the vicinity looking for an early breakfast and some coffee to boast your mind, do check out Faculty of Caffeine. We realise not many cafes in Johor actually open that early.
