Genki Sushi – $1.90 Dai Man Zoku’s Giant Sushi & New Outlet at Junction 8!
You can’t deny Singaporeans’ profound love for Japanese food. With so many Japanese restaurants and sushi chains around the corner, finding one that hits right in the heart, on the other hand, needs some digging.
Genki Sushi has been around for as long as I could remember. I have always seen long queues at Genki Sushi but never really understood the hype of it. With a history dated back to 1968, Genki Sushi first introduced the conveyor belt concept that moves sushi plates to diners. Instead of fine dining, this setting makes for a casual mood where diners are served though automated vehicles.
Following which in 2011, Genki Sushi made its grand launch in Singapore, bringing with it the Kousoku Express system. Modelled after the Japanese Shinkansen bullet trains, these automated machines would be sent swooshing from the kitchen right to where the diners are seated, delivering up to four sushi plates after orders.
With over 270 outlets worldwide in countries like Singapore, Indonesia, China and Australia, Genki Sushi is beyond just a sensation. Marking them apart from the other sushi chains is their unique mode of serving and what I have just found out, the quality too!
Fans and patrons of Genki Sushi would be familiar with the Signature Menu – Dai Man Zoku 大满足. Probably the one and only you can find in sushi chains, enliven your tastebud with giant sushi, 1.5 times larger than the usual ones.
Each sushi features a longer slab of sashimi, seafood, fish or meat that could literally wrap itself around the sushi rice. At only $1.90, these are well-worth every chargeable mouthful.
There are 12 giant sushi to choose from and we tried all!
Some notable ones include the Seared Salmon Belly with Black Pepper, Swordfish Belly, Seared Fluke Fin, Seared Steam Oyster with Black Pepper, Jumbo Crabstick Mentaiyaki, Jumbo Ebi Fry and Grilled Eel and Cheese Roll.
The sashimi were really fresh with succulent texture. I could feel myself swept into the sea in search for more.
It could get quite filling after popping a few of these in.
Besides, there are much more varieties, about 182 items, from the main menu, such as the Nigiri, Gunkan, Maki, Temaki, Soup, Noodles and Rice Bowls. Menu is refreshed one to two times annually to keep it exciting for diners too.
My friend strongly recommended the sashimi to me, especially the Salmon Sashimi $5.80 and Amaebi Sashimi (Sweet Shrimp) $5.80. The Amaebi Sashimi was really nice and sweet, and I would love to have them in chirashi bowl. As for the price, it was alright for the portion.
Garlic Soba $5.80 was amazeballs.
Served cold, mix the thin springy noodles well with the tuna flakes, garlic chips and chopped onion, and simply slurp it up. I was glad the garlic was not overpowering.
I have had many Chawanmushi before to know not to order anymore. Despite the protest, my Genki-supporter still went ahead to order for us, two bowls unrestrained. And I was thankful she did.
Genki Sushi’s Chawanmushi with Crab Meat (Steamed Egg Custard) $3.80 totally tipped the bowl with its generous ingredients within. Different from the stingy ones I usually had, every scoop was pure bliss with shredded crabmeats and mushrooms swirled within silky egg custard. Even the texture reminded me of shark fin soup, gooey and a little starchy. How could I not fall head over heels with this!
Currently, there are 6 Genki Sushi outlets in Singapore – Bugis+, Chinatown Point, Orchard Central, Takashimaya Shopping Centre, Waterway Point and the latest at Junction 8!
I am definitely returning!
