Mrs. Hen – Halal Ayam Geprek with Spicy Sambal in Far East Plaza

Halal-certified Indonesian eatery, Mrs. Hen, has opened its 5th outlet at Far East Plaza, level two. The stall is situated in the far left of the building. It is easier to reach by taking the stairs from in front of Hi Tea.

The signature here is the Ayam Geprek (from $7.50), a popular Indonesian dish comprising of smashed fried chicken and spicy sambal.

Mrs. Hen allows customisation of each dish, from your choice of protein to the base and toppings.

Besides Ayam Geprek (add $1.20), there are three other proteins to choose from – Ikan Geprek (Crispy Fish Fillet) (add $1.80), Tahu Geprek (Crispy Fried Tofu) and Terong Geprek (Crispy Fried Eggplant),

Pair it with either Rice or top up $2 for Nasi Kuning (Yellow Rice), Indomie (Instant Noodle) or a healthy serving of Salad.

The toppings are mainly spicy. The Sambal Signature has four spice level in increasing intensity. For non-spicy eaters, the Salted Egg Sauce (add $1) may be the only option but it looks equally tempting.

Menu

Try all three flavours with the Sambal Platter (add $1) Sambal Signature (Red Chilli), Sambal Hijau (Green Chilli) and Sambal Matah (Balinese Lemongrass Chilli).

The Sambal Signature is fiery hot. As someone with high tolerance for spiciness, this is actually quite spicy when eaten on its own. The rice helps to alleviate the heat a little. The other two are manageable and offer a nice contrast.

The fried chicken is exceptional. Battered and fried till crispy, the skin is thin and not overly oily. You can hear the crunch when slicing through. The meat is juicy and tender. Even without the chilli, the chicken is very tasty.

There is enough chilli to go with each bite of the chicken.

The portion is decent. You can add on a piece of Perkedel (Potato Patty) $1.20, Acar $1.50 and Melted Cheese $1.50 too.

In the mood for more? There are sides such as Fried Chicken Butt $3.90, Fried Enoki Mushroom $5.50 and Fried Crabstick $3.90.

The dish alone comes up to $9.70 for a meal in town.
