Yung Lai Siang Restaurant Melaka Popular Nonya Laksa & Prawn Mee

Yung Lai Siang Restaurant in Melaka is rather famous for the duo offering of Prawn Mee and Nonya Laksa RM 5.50.

The humble restaurant opens as early as 7am and simply features two stalls at the entrance. Before I had even entered, I was asked if I wanted Laksa, to which I indicated ‘one bowl’. The interior was spacious and it was bustling with customers even on a weekday afternoon.

The laksa was churned out bowl by bowl and while I noticed some customers paid on the spot, some, like me, paid after I had finished. The laksa came with either rice vermicelli or yellow noodles.

The bowl came shortly after in an appetising orange gravy sprinkled with numerous ingredients.

It’s relatively different in appearance from the laksa I had in Singapore. Yung Lai Siang Restaurant’s came in what I believed to be strips of crunchy tau pok (tofu puffs), so tasty I wished I could buy a packet home.

There were numerous fish cakes, small prawns, soft tau pok (I like how the tau pok here are cut in bite-sized portions), bean sprouts, refreshing shredded cucumbers, and a handful of cockles in the bowl.

The gravy was flavourful but not so strong in coconut taste. There were hints of numbing spiciness which was relatively tolerable. I liked how the rice vermicelli could lap up the gravy well enough such that each mouthful of noodle was one of pleasurable bliss. Nonetheless, I couldn’t bear to finish up the cockles as it appeared a tad red to me.

I really loved the Nonya laksa here and wouldn’t mind coming back for seconds!
