Jin Ho Mia 蒸好米 Alaskan Crab Hotpot and Rice Bowls at ARC

Jin Ho Mia 蒸好米 is a Hokkein term which translates to ‘a really good life‘. And a good life it is while I feast on a simmering pot full of seafood with a huge Alaskan Crab sitting atop, all coming to a bill of less than $100.

The quirky naming of their restaurant stretched further to their dishes as well. Somehow I felt oddly at ease flipping through the menu with familiar jargons jumping out at me.

Famous for their hotpot, the Tok Kong Pot 独贡锅 $48.80, Ah Boy Pot 小鲜肉锅 $33.80 and Giam Pui Pot 减肥锅$28.80 are three signature ones with fixed ingredients. If you understand dialect, you could easily choose just based on the titles – which probably resonates with what you are desiring right now, no?

Since we are here, we wanted to try the cream of the crop – Tok Kong Pot aka ‘Out of the World‘ Pot.

We got a big pot of Flower Clams, Tiger Prawns, Snow Crab Sticks, Roasted Pork, Cabbage, Xiao Bai Cai, Enoki Mushrooms, Tau Gua, Tau Kee, Eggs (Onsen and Raw) and a portion of Alaska Crab Leg. I would recommend topping up an extra $16 for a full Alaska Crab.

Selection of soup bases include Jin Ho Mia Fish Broth, Chicken, Cheese, Tom Yum and Tomato.

We had the tomato soup with the Tok Kong Pot which we were told would bring out the flavours of the seafood better.

I would like to have the Giam Pui Pot aka ‘Diet‘ Pot but I guess my companions are seeking love at the moment 🙂

The Ah Boy Pot aka ‘Fresh Meat‘ Pot was a meat-centric hotpot consisting of Jin Ho Mia Pork Balls, Lobster Balls, Bacon, Roasted Pork, Luncheon Meat, Chicken Chipolata and the usual vegetables as above mentioned.

Jin Ho Mia’s speciality lies in their Fish Broth which was boiled for over eight hours to achieve a rich flavour. When having the soup with the ingredients, I actually find the soup base to be rather light on the palette and easy drinking. Personally I would have loved a more intense broth.

I had expected the roasted pork to be not of my liking due to its sogginess. Amazingly, I actually ate a few pieces as having absorbed the essence of the broth, the pork had become tastier and juicy.

For two pax, the portion is just nice for a filling meal. If it is still not enough, you can order more from the Ala Carte section.

The side dish – Ah Ma Homemade Ngoh Hiang $9.80 – was love at first sight. I am a big fan of Ngoh Hiang and the ones from Jin Ho Mia really is Jin Ho Jiak (very nice)! The portion was just nice to fit into the mouth with a good amount of ingredients rolled within. Some Ngoh Hiang had that very mushy, doughy texture but this had none.

The chilli sauce was satisfyingly spicy which was simply shiok.

For lunch, people usually want a simpler, fuss-free meal and Jin Ho Mia cleverly comes up with a separate lunch-only menu.

Featuring their rice bowl series are the Pao Fan $14.80 (rice in asian-flavoured broth), Giam Pui Bowl $11.80 (healthy bowls) and Bee Tang Set $13.80 (selected asian-inspired bowls).

These asian-fusion bowls are an interesting twist to our usual poke bowls. Take the Sweet and Sour Chicken Bowl $11.80 for instance, it comprised of a delicious serving of well-marinated chicken chunks with seasoned mushrooms, cucumber, onsen egg and potato, over a bed of Japanese rice.

My friend absolutely adored the Tom Yum Pao Fan $14.80 – a heartening bowl of grains soaked in Tom Yum Broth. It reminded me of Mui Fan (porridge) but firmer in texture and more intense in flavours. Again, the ‘juicy’ pork bellies must have caught my friend’s heart.

In particular to the avocado in the rice bowls, they were undeniably fresh that I simply have to give them a praise.

On a side note, the rice bowls can be ordered as a set too!

Sauces are self-service.

Jin Ho Mia is the sister restaurant of popular outlets like Soi Thai Soi Nice and Atmosphere Bistro. It is located at Alexandra Retail Centre, just beside Labrador MRT. i love the concept behind Jin Ho Mia, how they manage to offer a unique dining experience with reasonable prices for their hotpot; and really know how to make life more fun by creating relatable terms that resonate with the locals.
