Norm Cafe Penang – Boozy Tiramisu, Heart-shaped Waffles & Cocktails

Opened since last October 2018, Norm is still going strong with its lovely list of waffles selections, a handful of mains and thirst-quenching teas and coffee.

As night draws in, the minimalist-looking cafe is momentarily filled with a beautiful purplish hue and upbeat music to match the vibe. Hop by from 8:30PM onwards and bask in the mood for some good cocktails curated by the guys behind Backdoor Bodega. Of course, if you in for a good drink in the day, the Noct menu is always ever-ready.

Waffles are Norm’s specialities here. There seven waffles-based dishes such as the Apple Crumble RM20 and Monkey Business (a rendition of the banana split) RM20, including two savoury ones like The Angry Shakshuka + Waffles RM24.

We had the Citrus Passion RM20, freshly baked on the spot and didn’t take long to arrive at our table

Four heart-shaped waffles came neatly stacked with grapefruit, oranges and half a passionfruit while an earl grey ice cream sat mightily on top studded with a dried orange slice.

The waffles were tasty on its own, lightly crisp at the surface while airy within. Despite the portion, it’s actually not so heavy on the stomach and good even for one pax. The citrusy fruits added a refreshing touch to the overall taste. The ice cream was smooth and creamy with hints of earl grey.

Hands down to probably one of the best tiramisus I have tasted till date.

I like that the ratio of coffee- and liqeur-soaked sponge to mascarpone is higher. That means I won’t get a bunch of cream in my mouth while at the same time, being able to savour the essence of it straight away.

The alcoholic kick in this humble piece is really solid. Three types of alcohol – Rum, Baileys and Kahlua – went into the making of the Tiramisu RM15.

Pair it with the signature coffee or teas. If not, the cocktails.

Interesting ones include the coffee-based cocktails like Cold Brew RM38. the chocoholic Midnight Mocha RM32 and tea-infused ones such as Black Beauty RM38 and Smokey Soapberry RM32. With names and concoction as alluring as these, you would be spoilt for choice.

I had two refreshing ones, bathed in the presence of tropical fruits.

The Tipsy in Tambun RM35 is light and easy-drinking with pomelo-infused gin, vodka and lemon juice, shaken with devilwood essence.

Nenas Pedas 2.0 RM35 warms me up with the fuzzy feeling down my tummy and is equally satiating with the lingering aromas of the pineapple at the back of my throat.

It is a smooth blend of spicy pineapple liqeur, homemade pineapple syrup, dark rum, brandy and a dash of orange juice.
