Old Seng Choong – New Yam with Pumpkin Snowskin & Red Lotus Paste with Bak Kwa Baked Mooncakes

This Mid-Autumn Festival, savour a delectable range of baked and snow skin mooncakes from Old Seng Choong. Our local favourite food here is being reimagined and given a royal twist with an elevated taste. New additions to the series include the highly recommended Red Lotus Paste with Bakwa, Yam with Pumpkin Snowskin and Pandan with Gula Melaka Snowskin. For instance, the Yam with Pumpkin Snowskin would make you feel like you are really chewing on ‘Orh Nee’, a popular Chinese dessert.

Enjoy early bird discounts when you make purchases before 31 July 2019. For subsequent weeks, tiered discounts will be made available in-store, online and at the Takashimaya pop-up booth. More information at the end of the post.

Mooncake Specials

The mooncakes are presented in boxes decorated with beautiful psychedelic splashes of colour alongside bird and peony motifs, both symbolic of prosperity and good fortune.

Four Heavenly Beauties $68.80

Each box contains two portions of each snow skin mooncakes, which are best eaten when chilled. The skin is mochi-like yet soft on the tongue. New flavours include the Yam with Pumpkin Snowskin and Pandan with Gula Melaka Snowskin, where the later reminds me of our local snack, the Ondeh Ondeh, minus the gula melaka.

What’s in the box!

Yuzu Martini Snowskin 冰皮柚子马丁尼 (Alcoholic)

Rum & Raisin with Dark Choc Pearl Snowskin 冰皮兰姆黑巧克力珍珠 (Alcoholic)

NEW! Yam with Pumpkin Snowskin 冰皮芋头南瓜 (Non-alcoholic)

NEW! Pandan with Gula Melaka Snowskin 冰皮香兰与椰糖 (Non-alcoholic)

Four Heavenly Kings $68.80

One of the highlights from the box is the Red Lotus Paste with Bakwa. It has almost a one to one ratio of generous hand-chopped bak kwa to red lotus paste. The bak kwa gives the overall taste of the mooncake a more savoury than sweet profile. if you are a huge fan of bak kwa, you would really love this.

What’s in the box!

White Lotus Paste with Pumpkin Seeds 南瓜子白莲蓉

White Lotus Paste Yolk Blend 蛋黄馅白莲蓉

Black Sesame with Yolk Blend & Melon Seeds 黑芝麻瓜子蛋黄馅

NEW! Red Lotus Paste with Bakwa 肉干红莲蓉

Another bias of mine is the nutty Wu Ren with Bakwa 五仁肉干 ($68.80 for a box of four mooncakes). The ingredients used are more premium, comprising of white sesame, olive and melon seeds, almonds, candied winter melon pieces and chopped bak kwa. In each bite, there is the crunch of the various nuts accompanied by a hint of sweetness from the bak kwa and zesty touches of kaffir lime leaves.

At Old Seng Choong, there are also other bake goods worth getting a tin home or two.

The cookies are out-of-the-world delicious, while nicely infused with familiar ingredients. Check out the salted egg yolk, spicy mala, hae bee hiam, bak kut teh and laksa cookies too.
