Sakanadonya Kunimaru at Boon Tat St – Best Donburi and Sashimi

Sakanadonya Kunimaru 魚問屋國丸 is a small eatery nestled at the cross junction of Boon Tat Street and Telok Ayer Street. This place is easily recognisable with menus mounted on wooden boards and hung in front of the stall. It can get super crowded during lunch breaks, serving mostly the office crowds nearby.

What makes Sakanadonya Kunimaru a continual popularity here is their fuss-free dining concept with straightforward menus where you choose from a few donburi options and side dishes.

One of their most-ordered dish is the Kaisen Don. No surprise here given that Sakanadonya Kunimaru offers value-for-money Kaisen Don at $16 topped with assorted fresh sashimi slices that would satisfy any belly. The most important part is that they take pride in their fishes, serving only the freshest and quality ones.

Admittedly I had worked nearby previously and passed by Sakanadonya Kunimaru on several occasions. The queue had always been a discouraging factor; well I only had an hour to come out, eat and rush back.

With that said, there is always a reason for people to queue right?

So when one of my friends gathered a few of us to have a dinner at Sakanadonya Kunimaru recently, I agreed instantly.

Might I suggest, if you can’t make it for lunch, come by for dinner. We graced the humble-looking stall on a weekday night, there were seats but they got slowly filled up as in the later part of the night.

Ikura – salmon roe

We started the meal with a spoonful of salmon roe each. I am used to having the bigger salmon roe elsewhere so when Sakanadonya Kunimaru served us this, it was rather peculiar. Though not as satisfying as the burst from the bigger roes, this was still decent and made a nice palate opener.

Sashimi Assortment

Featuring chunky slices of Tuna and diced spicy tuna, Swordfish and Salmon, each piece was slightly chilled, smooth and tender on the tongue. The fishes certainly lives up to expectation. A very memorable dish indeed.

Hotate sashimi

Again, the scallop sashimi was done just right, with each piece sliced perfectly. Despite being doused in a light sweet sauce, I could still taste the distinct natural flavours of the scallop. It was so good. I would come back again for the sashimi.

Dashi tamagoyaki

This was one of Sakanadonya Kunimaru’s specials. The rolled omelette was generously topped with fish roe and cooked salmon. I would have preferred a more moist interior, as the inclusion of cooked salmon also made it drier. That aside, the fish roe gave it more texture and enhanced the overall flavour with its savouriness.

We also heard that they have another upcoming special – Oyster Tamagoyaki – launching soon! Wow, that actually sounded interesting.

Wind down after a day of work with some sake too.

I have to say Sakanadonya Kunimaru is really good in their sashimi/ donburi at valued prices. It is no wonder that many people would queue for this.

What a gem found!
