Copper Chimney – Halal North Indian & Chindian Cuisine in Syed Alwi Road, Little India

North Indian meets Indian Chinese cuisine at Copper Chimney, a long-standing restaurant on Syed Alwi Road in Little India. The decade-old brand has recently undergone a revamp, to bring customers refreshing updates of their beloved dishes in a refurbished, modern setting. As part of the brand’s effort to introduce a variety of cuisines from India’s different regions to their customers, Copper Chimney’s menu now includes everything from Indian street food, to dishes that were once served to upper-class diners.

Diners’ foray into the fiery, flavorful world of Indian cuisine begins with the Masala Roomali ($8), a thin bread filled with onions and tomato, baked till crispy over an inverted oven and topped with a Masala seasoning. The sizeable dish is an expansive one, occupying and even overflowing the entirety of the plate it is served in. Crack it up to share with your dining mates, and tuck into the wonderfully spicy components.

Another snack-worthy dish is the Kukure Bhindi ($5), made with lady’s fingers that are fried to yield a golden brown exterior that is crunchy and crispy.

The foundation of a good Indian meal is a solid dish of naan, and Copper Chimney delivers on the Chilli Cheese Naan ($6.50). The Indian staple is elevated with the use of green chilli that cuts through the richness of the cheese. While lip-smacking tasty on its own, you can also enjoy it with a trio of richly-flavoured curries, including the Lucknow Murg Korma ($16), Madras Prawn Curry ($17), and Chicken Lababdaar ($15).

Tikka gets a pescatarian-friendly upgrade with the Salmon Fish Masala ($18). Cooked in Copper Chimney’s custom-made tandoor, the fiery orange cubes of salmon meat are tender and delicious. A must-try if you are craving something other than your usual fix of chicken tikka.

Groups can tuck into the mouthwatering Sultani Seekh Rice Platter ($29). This behemoth plates up fluffy, premium basmati rice topped with succulent lamb and chicken kebabs for an out-of-this-world biryani eating experience. Watch out for the rice if you’re cutting up the kebabs for sharing!

The Triple Szechwan Rice ($15) combines Indian and Chinese flavours into one delicious melting pot. This iconic Mumbai street food features fried rice and crispy Hakka noodles, creating a gastronomical tapestry of textures. Together with the spicy gravy, this fine trio of flavours sets tastebuds aflame, so have a cup of lassi on hand if you’re trying this!

Choose from vegetarian, chicken, or prawn as a topping for this fusion delicacy.

Last but not least, wrap up with a couple of Copper Chimney’s desserts. The Jalebi with Rabdi ($8) combines a syrupy, deep-fried snack with the neutralising notes of the rabdi. I’ve also heard that this is a breakfast staple in India.

Diners craving a lighter finish to their meal can turn to the Pista Rismalai ($7.50), another traditional sweet loaded with chopped pistachios.
