Lok Pot by Lucky 5 – $1 Skewers for Hotpot, BBQ and Deep-Fried

Lok Pot by Lucky 5 is literally a food haven with over 60 kinds of skewers that can be cooked 3 ways – hotpot, BBQ or deep fried. This humble lok lok stall used to be located at 416 Bedok North Ave 2 in February and has then shifted to its current location in Toa Payoh on the 2nd of August.

Besides $1 skewers, Lok Pot also serves a range of very affordable ala carte dishes such as the signature Curry Fish Head $20, Assam Fish Head $20 and super tasty Prawn Paste Chicken $9 (more can be found at the end of the post)!

We get to choose from 6 kinds of soup base (max two):

Normal $3 each: Dried Scallop, Tomato, Herbal Chicken, Tom Yum

Premium $6 each: Laksa, Satay

Herbal Chicken and Tom Yum were my favourite two with the former being slightly peppery while the latter being not too spicy, more sourish and refreshing I would say. The Herbal Chicken soup got even sweeter after we boiled some cabbages and skewers in it.

Satay hotpot??? That’s a first for me and definitely one of a kind in Singapore. It was surprisingly easy on the palette while nutty in taste.

The Tomato soup we had was rather light and we were told that they used real tomatoes to make the soup. At the end of the meal, the soup got more intense and thicker.

As for sauces, there are simply so many that can rivalled that of other hotpot restaurants. Interesting ones include Chilli Crab (wow!) and Satay Sauce.

Lok Lok for Hotpot Lovers

The variety of skewers is simply astounding! We get to choose whichever we want from the three huge fridges stock full of skewers. All at $1, you wouldn’t have to worry about your wallet as you grab those duck breast, cheese meatballs, cheese tofu, bacon wrapped enoki, king oyster mushrooms, spam meats, sausages… and the list goes on and on. You really have to be there to see for yourselves!

Premium ingredients such as bamboo clams, oysters, scallops and prawns are priced accordingly.

Look at that amount of oozing cheese!

I super love these Bacon wrapped Enoki!

All the skewers can be cooked according to how you like it. Besides doing it the Lok Lok style, you can have it BBQ or deep fried.

Deep frying for those who love intensity

The same Bacon wrapped Enoki was deep fried and sprinkled with some concocted chilli powder! It got more savoury (saltier), crispy and addictive.

Some of the skewers like the broccoli was a little bitter; perhaps over-fried.

Start the fire and BBQ away

BBQ can’t go wrong. Be creative and you will find yourselves immerse in those BBQ skewers, munching on squids, prawns chicken, satay and sweet pineapples.

Ala carte dishes we adore

It is rare to find these seafood dishes in a hawker and Lok Pot has done it skilfully with the Fresh Garlic Bamboo Clams ($10 each), Cheese / Garlic Scallops ($7.50 for 5) and Cheese / Garlic Oysters ($9.90 for 3).

The meats were tender, not overly chewy. I would actually prefer the garlic seafood than the cheese ones as the garlic enhanced the overall flavours even more.

The oysters were so yummy, plump and juicy!

Eggplant $4.50 was rather reasonably priced with two halves of an eggplant spread with sambal sauce. The soft flesh and sambal made every mouthful a smooth and creamy experience.

Sambal Stingray $12 was a let-down. The meat was tough and the only saving grace was perhaps the sambal sauce.

On the flip side, most of us enjoyed the Satay Chicken ($0.70 per stick, minimum 5 sticks). Nicely grilled with some charred edges, the chicken was tender and juicy.

Lok Pot’s well-received dish goes to this Prawn Paste Chicken $9. You could easily tell it is slightly different from the usual zichar prawn paste chicken, looking less orange with an almost crisp-like coating which makes it extra crispy. Would love to have this again!
