Teppei Japanese Restaurant – Popular, Affordable Omakase in Tanjong Pagar

Teppei Japanese Restaurant has been on our checklist for several years and this September, we managed to book for the dinner omakase!

There are two slots for the omakase: 6:30PM and 8:30PM. We had the second slot and entered the restaurant close to 9PM. This month’s omakase is priced at $100++ per pax and will be featuring various seafood ingredients.

The 15-course meal comprises different types of fishes like Amberjack, Flounder and Tilefish, as well as Oyster, Udon, Claypot Rice, a choice of main course and two desserts. Premium items like Uni, Otoro and Ikura are present too.

Menu

We began with the fig Monaka, a type of Japanese sweet which resembles a macaron. The mini bowl of thin Udon that followed, was served in slurp-worthy savoury dashi – so addictive that it warranted more servings! The next few courses consisted of tender aburi Belt Fish, seaweed-filled Bonito freshened with tangy Shiso, Amberjack complemented with crunchy beetroot and pomegranate, Flounder and melt-in-the-mouth Otoro and maguro.

While revelling in each bite, we were introduced to the next course, Negitoro Sushi Roll. Each mind-blowing piece featured hearty sashimi slices, while one was topped with glistening Ikura and another was lavished with umami uni. It’s recommended to plop the entire sushi roll into your mouth to enjoy it at its best.

Chef Jinta’s special was the Clay Pot Rice, lightly seasoned and complemented with crunchy fried lotus root pressed against sweet unagi slices. I was sold.

Before easing into the next few dishes, each diner was gifted a smiley/starry tomato on stick which was such a mood!

Next up, we had the succulent Tilefish wrapped in thin crispy layer, richly flavoured Kyoto Beef and plump, juicy Oyster paired with soy milk and chewy resin – all were equally engaging too.

We chose the King Crab Don as our main course. In between mouthful, we were rewarded with chilled crab meats, blissful burst of Ikura, sweet creamy uni and and crunchy bites of tobiko, elevated with perfect vinegared rice.

In a nutshell, we are amazed with everything we had. For the price, it is also one of the most value-for-money omakase in town. Would definitely return!
